Bettye S. Hurd Global Legacy Fellowship
Fellows are medical students or recent graduates who work to deepen understanding and reduction of maternal and child health disparities in the U.S. and globally. They engage with community leaders, health care professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders to collectively learn the comprehensive system; and explore innovative solutions to implement personal, professional and system change to obtain our collective goals.
Safe Birth Kits
According to the UN Population Fund, a woman dies every two minutes giving birth for lack of access to safe birth supplies. To combat preventable deaths of mothers and babies, The Bettye S. Hurd Global Legacy Birthing Project has worked since 2013 to sponsor and create kits with basic medical supplies to ensure a sanity space for labor even when there are no hospitals or clinics for miles. Most recently, our intern led project sent 300 safe birth kits to the Gambia.
Replicating the Birthing Project Model
Following the roots of the US-founded organization Birthing Project, the Bettye S. Hurd Global Legacy Birthing Project promotes a culture of women’s wellness around the world by providing training, technical assistance, and capacity building to community leaders to replicate our internationally recognized model of SisterFriending.
